Case Study #002: Car Rental Scam

A client approached JMS Rogers to urgently discuss with our team about him being scammed a total amount of S$7,500 in a car rental scam.

Based on the facts presented and studied, he told us that he was a grab driver who wanted to change to a 7-seater premium car so that he can earn more. He mentioned to us that he got to know the super cheap car rental deal from Carousell under a car rental agency.

The person instructed our client to make a deposit first to secure the car. As our client was excited to get the new car and the low price that the scammer posted, he willingly agreed and transferred the money. After payment was made, the post on Carousell was removed and our client was shocked.

Our investigations team asked him for the necessary documents and proof so that we can find out more details on the scammer swiftly.

In less than 2 days, our team identified the scammer through thorough our investigation. We informed our client of the outcome and our General Manager instructed him to come to our office to meet with the scammer.

During the meeting, we firmly advised the scammer to return the money to our client or we will take necessary actions to submit his criminal conduct to the relevant authorities. He accepted the consequences and transferred the S$7,500 to our client immediately. We also advised our client not to fall for these irresistible scams and shared more on how he can protect himself in the future.

1. Look out for vehicles advertised online or on website at a cheaper rate than the prevailing rate.

2. Only rent with reputable companies by doing due diligence.

3. Verify the vehicle and its ownership. If you are renting from an individual that you know through an online marketplace, request to see the vehicle in person and relevant documents to verify its ownership.
