What Should You Do If You Lose a Crown or Filling?

If you’ve lost a crown or filling, don’t panic, but don’t delay either. Here’s what you should do:

Keep the Crown or Filling: If the crown or filling is still in your mouth, gently remove it and store it in a safe place. Bring it with you to your dentist appointment as it may be possible to reattach it.

Clean Your Mouth: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and reduce the risk of infection. Avoid eating hard foods on the affected side until you can see your dentist.

Avoid Home Fixes: While it might be tempting to use temporary adhesive or over-the-counter products to fix the issue, this can do more harm than good. It’s important to let a professional like Dr. McClane handle the repair.

Schedule an Appointment Immediately: Call McClane Dentistry as soon as possible to schedule a visit. Even if you’re not in pain, leaving a lost crown or filling untreated can lead to further damage or infection.

What to Expect at Your Appointment with Dr. McClane

At McClane Dentistry, we understand that losing a crown or filling can be a frustrating experience. When you come in for your appointment, here’s what you can expect:

Thorough Evaluation: Dr. McClane will assess the situation and determine the underlying cause of the lost crown or filling. If decay or infection is present, it will need to be treated before the restoration can be replaced.

Restoration or Replacement: In some cases, your crown or filling can be reattached. If not, Dr. McClane will recommend the best solution for your tooth, whether it’s a new crown, filling, or another form of treatment.

Preventive Advice: Dr. McClane will guide you on how to take better care of your crowns and fillings to prevent future issues. Avoiding hard foods and practicing good oral hygiene can help you maintain your dental work for years to come.

Is Losing a Crown or Filling a Dental Emergency?

While losing a crown or filling isn’t always a medical emergency, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Exposing the unprotected tooth can lead to sensitivity, irritation, or even pain. More importantly, delaying treatment increases the risk of further damage, such as decay or infection, which can result in more complex dental procedures.

At McClane Dentistry, we offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies, including lost crowns and fillings. We know how important it is to restore your smile and protect your teeth as quickly as possible.
