Why Handguns Are Categorically Inferior (and How a Micro Conversion Kit Can Change That)

That title’s a real hot take, but we mean to stand behind it. There are numerous shortcomings integral to the design of a handgun, regardless of action, chambering, or model.

Let’s start with handling. Handguns are unwieldy; they’re either too light to offer stability or too heavy to shoot comfortably. There’s no way to effectively brace a handgun, making it hard to shoot accurately.

They have short sight radii, making them unforgiving and inaccurate, along with short barrels that compromise power and accuracy.

On top of that, handguns offer few points for attachment. In fact, some handguns offer effectively none without substantial modification.

Handguns are usually also chambered around cartridges that don’t offer nearly the same stopping power and trajectory as comparable rifle cartridges – or even shotshells.

Granted, the point of a handgun is concealment, paired with a little bit of an edge in tight quarters. But these listed are serious tradeoffs to gain those marginal advantages.

That can be changed – with a device known as a micro conversion kit, or MCK, that serves as a chassis for your handgun and will transform it into something akin to a carbine.

The MCK Paradigm Shift

An MCK is basically a platform that accepts your handgun and which will convert it into something like a short barreled rifle or a carbine.

The micro conversion kit can be braced against the shoulder with a stock like a rifle, vastly improving handling and accuracy.

Not only the ability to brace it but the extra mass will also help tame recoil and muzzle flip. Most shooters report they can shoot accurately over an MCK even at intermediate ranges in excess of 100 yards.

The micro conversion kit will also revolutionize the footprint of the platform with respect to attachment points. MCKs are covered in attachment points, can be configured with rail adapters, and even if this were not the case, there are a ton of MCK accessories that are designed specifically for them.

Another selling point of the MCK is that it is designed for compatibility with your handgun (dependent on model) while requiring absolutely no modifications whatsoever to the gun.

Now, there is a small tradeoff. Converting your handgun with one of these kits will fundamentally alter the size and footprint – so you lose the advantage a handgun offers in terms of concealment.

But considering the fact that you can make this upgrade without making any changes to the platform, that it can be easily reversed, and on top of all the other advantages, it seems like that’s a minor concession to make.

There simply is no handgun upgrade you can make that will have the same level of impact. Handling will improve, recoil control will improve, accuracy will improve, and the whole thing will offer you numerous avenues for expansion and accessorization.
